Background of the Study
Federalism in Nigeria is a key feature of the country's political structure, where power is divided between national and regional governments. This system has far-reaching implications for the functioning of local political structures. Taraba State, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, has a unique political landscape influenced by federal structures that decentralize power, thereby affecting local governance in Taraba LGA (Abdullahi & Waseem, 2023).
The decentralization of power in a federal system theoretically enhances local governance by bringing decision-making closer to the people. However, the relationship between federalism and local political structures can also create challenges, including resource allocation, political representation, and governance efficiency (Ibrahim & Aliyu, 2024). This study aims to evaluate how federalism impacts the local political structures in Taraba LGA, with a focus on governance, political participation, and the role of local authorities in shaping public policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although federalism is meant to promote local autonomy and effective governance, its implementation in Nigeria has often led to conflicts over resource distribution, governance practices, and political representation. In Taraba LGA, there are concerns about the balance of power between the state and federal government, and its impact on local political structures and governance outcomes. This study will explore the extent to which federalism has shaped local political dynamics in Taraba LGA, particularly regarding decision-making, political participation, and governance.

The findings will offer valuable insights into how federalism can be optimized to enhance governance and political participation at the local level (Sani & Habibu, 2023).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of federalism on local political structures in Taraba LGA during the 2023 general elections. Limitations include the potential difficulty of accessing political insiders and local officials who may be reluctant to share sensitive information related to federalism and governance.
